Many forms of dance are performed to music; however, music was not a factor that was controlled for in this review and this warrants future investigations to distinguish the effect of dance from that of the accompanying music. Dance was found to be inferior to other physical activity interventions for the psychological outcomes of motivation stress [76], and self-efficacy [78]. Despite generally having higher participation in dance and exercise [91], only five of the included studies investigated psychological and cognitive function in younger people (mean age below 25 years) [66, 73, 74, 76, 79], warranting further research. Health systems should incorporate structured exercise programs as standard-of-care for this patient population,” concluded the study authors. Whether the psychological and/or cognitive benefits of dance are maintained in the short, medium or long term following these dance interventions is unknown, as only one paper followed up participants after the completion of the intervention.
What Is A Structured Exercise Program?
Muscle atrophy under these conditions appears to be impacted by the role of the muscle groups affected (89, 90). For example, upper body muscles tend to be less affected by unloading (91, 92) whereas postural muscles such as the extensors of the trunk, knee, and ankle (i.e., plantar flexors) are highly impacted (89, 93–97). Some individuals experience additional metabolic disturbances, including upregulation of genes related to lipogenesis and reduced lipid export, and insulin resistance (98). Histologically, unloading induces a slow-to-fast myofiber type shift, often contributing to a larger hybrid pool (99, 100). At the myofiber level, decreases in power and force are apparent (101, 102) and unloaded shortening velocity often increases (103). Furthermore, a 40% reduction in the muscle satellite cell pool (104) may have implications for regenerative capacity upon reloading.
Psychological and Cognitive Outcomes in Children (16 Years and Under)
Dance provides participants with additional health benefits due to the social and interactive aspects, its enjoyable nature and its unique cognitive challenges [32]. The synergistic effects of improved circulation and neurogenesis create optimal conditions for learning and cognitive performance. Enhanced hippocampal neurogenesis facilitates faster encoding of new information, while increased prefrontal perfusion supports sustained attention during complex academic tasks (55). Meta-analytic evidence indicates that students engaging in regular physical activity demonstrate 10-15% better performance on standardized tests of mathematics and reading comprehension compared to sedentary peers (56). These cognitive benefits follow a dose-response relationship, with maximal effects observed at moderate-intensity exercise (40-60% VO2max) performed for 30–45 minutes, 3–5 times weekly (57). For physical education students, these mechanisms are particularly salient as they suggest that sport training may confer dual benefits – improving both athletic performance and academic achievement through fitness apps for realistic expectations shared neurobiological pathways.

Given the evidence supporting the role of structured exercise to improve cognition, a truly active comparator group would further our understanding of the effectiveness of dance as an intervention. The impact of dance on cognitive health outcomes in the oldest age group suggests that dance has additional cognitive benefits beyond those attributed to exercise in older people. This may be because of the combination of exercise and cognitive challenge for which there is emerging evidence of benefits on cognition compared with exercise only [99].

Moreover, this focus prevents researchers from identifying potential sleeper effects or delayed benefits that might only manifest after years of consistent practice. The field is thus left with an incomplete and potentially overly optimistic picture, limiting the ability of educational institutions to make informed decisions about investing in long-term mental health programming within their physical education departments. Addressing this gap requires a concerted shift towards ambitious, large-scale longitudinal cohorts that track participants across these critical life stages. Such studies must employ consistent, validated measurement tools at regular intervals to ensure data comparability over time. They must also be designed to account for and document confounding variables like changes in lifestyle, additional life stressors, and variations in exercise habits post-graduation. Until this gap is adequately addressed, the full potential of exercise training as a sustained mental health promotion tool remains promising yet ultimately unproven.

In accordance with HIPAA Safe Harbor De-Identification guidelines, each participant is assigned a unique ID. The session dates and event marks during the protocols (in tags.csv) have been modified by a random number of days, with the resulting shift exceeding one year. Time samples have been shifted consistently across all records to maintain signal alignment. Empatica provides time in Unix timestamp format, but files are already converted to UTC. Participants from the first stage are labeled as “Sxx” while those from the second stage are labeled as “fxx”. The second version of the protocol incorporated several modifications based on previous experience.

Studies have shown that dog owners are far more likely to meet their daily exercise requirements than non-owners. One year-long study found that walking an overweight dog helped both the animals and their owners lose weight (11 to 15 pounds). Researchers found that the dogs provided support in similar ways to a human exercise buddy, but with greater consistency and without any negative influence. Exercise can be a fun time to socialize with friends and working out with others can help keep you motivated.
